Olympic Games Mascots

Olympic Games Mascots - Dog Hotel Panama - Day Care

Each edition, which is held every four years, has a new mascot that symbolizes the culture, values and spirit of the host country. That is why, the Olympic Games commemorate various traditions year after year, which tend to represent messages of solidarity between nations, respect for the culture and history of the territories (especially those who are the hosts), among several other key aspects of this sporting competition.

Let’s get to know some representative mascots of the Olympic Games.

Waldi – Munich (1972)

This dachshund became the first official mascot of the Olympic Games. Created by graphic designer Elena Winschermann, Waldi represents the popular canine breed common in Bavaria that stands out for its endurance and agility.

Sam – Los Angeles (1984)

Halfway between Uncle Sam and one of the popular cartoons of the 80s is this Olympic mascot that was co-created by Walt Disney Productions and Robert Moore. The choice of the eagle is a double reference, also paying homage to the bird that greeted the winner of the race when he crossed the finish line in the ancient Olympic Games.

Syd, Olly and Millie – Sydney (2000)

The Sydney Olympics were the first in history to have three mascots: a platypus, a kookaburra and an echidna. Each of the hyper-realistic characters created by Matthew Hatton celebrated Australia’s local fauna and at the same time represented water, air and land.

Vinicius – Rio (2016)

Created by the animation studio Birdo Produções, this mascot has a design inspired by video games that mixes Brazilian exoticism by incorporating different animals from the country to represent the effervescent and diverse culture of that nation.

Olympic Phyrge – Paris (2024)

The Olympic and Paralympic mascots for this edition are inspired by the Phrygian caps, a symbol of freedom in the history of France and which for these Olympic Games represent the revolution through sport.
